starter dead?

I have never fully understood the symptoms of a dead starter vs. a dead
battery.  I have power in the car, radio comes on, dash lights up, but when I
turn the key, it just grinds.  I can feel that the ignition is just not
kicking over.  That means the starter is dead, right?

How hard would it be for a lame armchair mechanic to replace the starter?  I
plan on twice as long as anyone else on this list, but what is a good estimate
for all of you guys?  2-3 hours?

Should I just buy one from jgy customs?
