Bluebird is a good choice, they dont make as much horsepower and arent as
bulletproof, but theyre easier and cheaper to find and install (and repair).
Your shop is wrong however, you can use the GTi-R ecu, harness and MAF (MAF
especially, i dont understand how they could say that its unusable. Probably
because they figure they can charge you extra for an SR20 ecu and harness
and then charge more for a z32 MAF and JWT ecu reprogram), there are people
on this list who use these parts with no problems, your shop is just trying
to rack up the charges on you, or else theyre too lazy to match the wires on
the harness for the splicing. The starter does indeed have to be replaced,
but so does the whole tranny, the GTi-R tranny is AWD, so just get an sr20
tranny and starter, i got one from Chris at sr20development for
550+shipping. Thats a SR20 LSD tranny with no 5th gear popout. Use
nissanforums.com, sr20forum.com and nissanperformancemag.com to research the
sr20de swap. All in all I paid 2500 shipped for my complete GTi-R front clip
from canada, and im paying about another 1500 in parts.
If youre going for raw horsepower and arent afraid of a little work, get the
GTi-R. The primary components that need replacing are the transmission (and
clutch/flywheel/pressureplate), the axles, axle mounts, starter, the heater
hoses, a downpipe and the motormounts. You will have to replace almost all
of these parts with a bluebird anyhow if you're swapping from a GA16DE so
you might as well go with the GTi-R, youll be paying the same price for the
same parts and not making as much power as you could have. Not to mention if
you by a GTi-R clip you get a brake upgrade as well, and if your car is ABS
equipped you can use the GTi-R's ABS system as well.
