I too would be interested in any ones experience with lower budget welders,
especially MIG welders supposedly capable of welding aluminum.

I have a friend who bought a lower end Lincoln Electric that runs of of 120
ac. It uses flux cored wire, and can be setup as a MIG welder. I've used it a
bit for steel, and it seems to handle everything that a hobbyist/DYI person
would need. I haven't tried aluminum with it though.
