The coating is to keep the SS braiding from wearing holes in other things
that it might rub up against, such as struts, CB boots, wheels, (well, maybe
its a greater danger to the paint) and wires.
A braided line is a wonderful cutting device if it is allowed to rub on
other surfaces...
