My vote is volume control itself or something in the volume control 
circuit of the head unit. If the potentiometer were bad (most head units 
don't even have these anymore) you should be able to make scratchy 
noises just by turning it up and down. Sometimes if you just mess around 
turning it up and down a lot, the scratchies go away for a while. You 
might also pull apart the head unit and look for a cold solder joint in 
the volume control circuit. If I were a betting man I'd put my money there.
