It's the looseness of the shaft or bearing that transmits the "twist" between the knob and rheostat volume control. Somewhere inside there, this free play causes snap and pop when it is touched or turned and also when hole-of-no-return potholes are encountered (this does not refer to divorces). I would guess that the scratchiness is a product of both the volume control and ancient speakers.
