I don't think that those panels are very structural at all.  The doors work
great, no sags whatsoever.  The passenger side is a bit stiff because the
hinges are old, but the drivers side (which has new hinges) works like brand
new.

Nonetheless, we'll be cutting out all the rust and welding in new metal,
both on the a-pillars and the rocker panels.  Planning on welding a length
of angle-iron along the rockers to, to allow for jacking the car up anywhere
along the side and to provide a little additional chassis stiffness.  Since
this car will see gravel rally use, it'll get pounded pretty hard.  I'm also
going to look into reinforcing the strut towers.

My buddy who'll probably be doing the welding for me was competing at the
ClubRally national championship this past weekend.  He co-drives a late 80s
VW GTI.  They managed to punch the oil-pan up into the block on a low water
bridge at 70mph.  Ouch.
