According to my shop manual:

1N4: first three chars = manufacturing location
            (1N4 = US, JN1 = Japan)

    G: engine type (G = SR20DE, E = GA16DE)

    B: vehicle line (B = Sentra)

3: model change (0-9) (probably irrelevant here)

    2: body type (2 = 2-door sedan)

    A: restraint system (A = 3-point auto belt, mechanical)

    0: check digit (irrelevant here)

    M: model year (M = 1991)

    C: manufacturing plant (C = Smyrna, TN)

last six digits are the vehicle serial number (chassis number)

The VIN doesn't indicate the transmission, but as others have observed,
the 1991 SE-R wasn't made with an automatic.

For a little money, you can do a vehicle history on CarFax
<http://www.carfax.com/>.

Hope this helps(tm),

R.
