Hey SR 20 Nuts,
I was on the list several years ago - for about a year after I bought my 96
G20 5 Spd. ( silver )
Made it down to the Palomar Drag Strip with a buddy in his black classic
once, and met about a half dozen of you. Zach, Tom, Mike are names I
remember from that day, along with names from the list like Merlin, and
George.
How the hell are you guys ?
I'm back. Still got the G20, and it's still almost stock with an intake, and
adjustable KYB's as my only mods. ( Mobil One since break-in )
It only has about 52,000 miles on it, but the clutch is almost gone. Going
to need one REALLY soon. Stock ?
BUT - I have a much more pressing problem. I failed my CA smog test a few
weeks ago. Only one component, the unburnt hydrocarbons, were a little high
- by about 20 %.
I called Infiniti. They asked if I had had my 60,000 K service done. I had
not. They suggested that I do this, especially since I do a lot of city
driving - that my plugs might be fouled.
Well - I decided to change the plugs only, as I want to do a bunch of stuff
including the clutch - front brakes - and change all the belts along with
the normal 60,000 K stuff all at once. I did not change the cap or rotor.
My car failed the test again today - NO improvement ! ( but still only about
20% to high on unburnt Hydros )
Any guesses ? I do not know if my cap and rotor were changed when I had
Infiniti do the 30,000 K service a couple years ago.
Can a dirty K & N cause this ?
Have any of you guys tried these special additives like 'Bardahl All in One'
which help your car pass a smog test ?
Other suggestions ?
Are any of you SoCal'ers driving with the Touring Car Racing Assoc this
weekend at Cal Speedway in Fontana ?
The vintage car group that is partly sponsored by the watch company I rep is
sharing the track with them. Our company is sponsoring the Vintage
Automobile Racing Association, and I go to a vintage race about once a
month. A few 510's, and 240 Z and a 1600 Roadster race in it. I REALLY want
a race car.
At the lunch break - people can take their street cars onto the track, so
I've run my car at speed on the road courses at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,
Phoenix International, Buttonwillow, and Willow Springs. FUN !
No wonder I need a clutch and brakes !
If any of you want to see some pics, I am including a couple links. Nice 510
on one page.

If any of you have some suggestions about passing the test without doing
anything major, I'd appreciate hearing them.
Maybe I'll see one or two of you at Fontana on Sunday.
Best regards,
