I'd try to avoid removing the valve cover. It's a PITA and you risk
getting chunks of plug boot and other dirt inside your engine. You can
probably get it out with a long needle-nose pliers.

The fuel pump problem *probably* would have bitten you on the arse by now
if it hasn't been changed. There should be a silver sticker on the
underside of the hood and on the access cover to the fuel pump if it's been
done.
I doubt the rocker arm thing, too. It would probably try to start and
maybe run, but you'd hear nasty noises under the hood. Was it running OK
when it was shut off?

I once had the screw holding the distributor rotor to the shaft fall out,
so the rotor was spinning on the shaft. The plugs were sparking, but
nowhere near to the correct time!
I scanned the TSB about starting problems, and sent it to your separately.
