That plastic piece that goes down into the fenderwell (if its the same thing
that I had on my B15) is just a resonator.

The box in the fenderwell actually has another opening for a pipe that goes
back UP into the engine bay, which is where the air comes from.

George is (as always) right about this though.
When the car is running, even if the engine is hot, air goes through the
engine bay, making it close to ambient temps. Problem is with heatsoak or
stopped at a red light, etc...
