What causes CV joints to go bad?

So it was a bad idea to let mine go out to that bar when ever they wanted?
Ah crap I knew it would end up biting me in the ass one day.  I always
though I loved them enough, maybe too much so and they felt strangled.  Oh
well they have already went south, as with grandparents time to throw them
in a home and get a new set...
