4.85 Volts seems to be normal, at least this is what my loom read also.
The sensor itself reads I think from .45ohm to 2.xx ohm, depending on temp.
If you search the mailing list you will find a good thread on this.
I found the exact specs somewhere.

I don't think so.
I was running my engine for a few days without the thermo sensor/sender even
plugged in at all.
It's supposed to run rich, however I didnt really notice a big difference.
Apparently this sender is for the ECU, so it can basically alter timing and
fueling depending on temps, etc..
