Something to consider,

When changing the oil, were you being scrupulously clean when changing the
filter?  The oil pump feeds the outer part of the filter, the center of the
filter then flows clean oil to the engine's oil galleries.  If you
accidentally drop crap into the center post of the filter mount (bits of
paper towel when cleaning the filter mount or even grit soaked oil), this
goes straight to all your moving parts.  Dropping crap outside of this post
ends up in the filter where it should go.

What size is this passage?  Is there a check valve in there that could get
constricted?  Did you use brand name oil and filters?

Hard for me to see sludge buildup in an engine where the oil is changed
every 3K miles.
