But did everthing but the cat...finally replaced the cat and I passed in 30 seconds - didn't even run the full test. I think NOx might be dicy with the higher compression, but a 3-way cat might just do the trick.</div>

<div> </div>
<div>The guy who was looking at the car says it needs a new cat, rear O2 sensor, and rear exhaust section. He is pretty confident that it will then pass emissions, but not certain, since it has a JDM engine. Let's just assume that it is a 9.0:1 engine, which I always thought it probably was. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>My friend read the emissions test results to me, and HC, CO and NOX are all over limits by a factor of 4 to 5. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I'm going to just assume that the cat is bad. Probably one or both O2 sensors too. Apparently the car had a small exhaust leak near the muffler when he drove away - I never heard it from inside the car, so the first time I ever heard it was when I watched him drive away - that turned into a big leak by the time he got to CA. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Mechanic told friend that it was possible that another sensor was an issue, I'm assuming he's probably talking about the coolant temp sensor. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I did a tuneup on the car last fall, but didn't replace the rotor since I got the wrong part (oops) - so new plugs, wires, cap, but old, worn rotor. I suppose this could affect HC a bit but not 4x. Vacuum leak also theoretically possible culprit, though i don't recally any other symptoms that would suggest that. I think the car had a slight misfire at idle, though I never paid that much attention to it. Fuel economy has dropped from low- to mid-30s on trips a few years ago to high 20s on trips now. </div>
<div><FONT color=#000000><FONT size=2><FONT face=arial,sans-serif></FONT></FONT></FONT> </div>
<div>I think that there is a very good chance that replacing the cat, exhaust (apparently it's not going to pass inspections without that) and one or maybe both O2 sensors will get the car to pass (I only wish I were there to do it myself so that I could save my friend a bunch of money!); maybe the coolant temp sensor. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>What say y'all?</div>
<div> </div>
<div>And....is the high-compression motor going to doom it to fail even with all this stuff done? This is a queston I, and he, want to havea reaosnable answer to before proceeding, since it's no use spending the money to fix that stuff if the motor will failt it anyway. </div>

One of my friends just bought my '96 P10 and drove it back to CA from Chicago. He had a smog appointment for it today, and it did not pass. I am not sure what all the issues are (my phone battery died, so I got cut off) but it sounds like the motor itself is an issue. I got the car with a bad motor and when it eventually I died I put in a replacement from SOKO, when they still had a warehouse in Chicago. It is a red-top motor, though I don't know whether it's high-compression or not. All emissions equipment is the same, as that (incl. intake mani, etc.) was carried over from the original engine. <BR><BR>-Is this car going to pass CARB smog at all with the motor it has? If nominally no, is it possible to find a friendly place that will pass the car as long as it actually passes the sniffer, etc.?<BR><BR>-Does CARB do a sniffer test for OBD2 cars? IL has emissions 'testing' but it's just a plug-in-to-the-OBD2-port thing, and the car has never had a sniffer test in my ownership of it, so I have no idea if, say, the cat is good. <BR><BR>What else do I not know about CARB emissions compliance? I really want to help him find a solution to this. The car is stock except, I suppose, for the possible high compression.<BR><BR>thanks,<BR>David<BR><BR><BR><BR>+----------------------------------------------------------------------+<BR>The mailing list home page is <a href="http://www.se-r-list.org">http://www.se-r-list.org</a>/<BR>To modify your subscription, go to <a href="http://www.se-r-list.org/mailman/listinfo/se-r">http://www.se-r-list.org/mailman/listinfo/se-r</a><BR><BR><BR></DIV></DIV></BLOCKQUOTE></DIV></DIV></ZZZBODY></ZZZHTML></BLOCKQUOTE><PRE>
