He is definitely, definitely not a car guy. I have to dial way back on the detail and jargon I use when I talk about the car. So no troubleshooting for him. I forgot to mention that the car did have a CEL here. IIRC, it was a P0402, which is 'rear o2 reading high' or something like that - something with the rear O2 sensor, anwyay. I was fairly confident I knew what caused that; the rear motor mount has been shot for ages, and I let it go so long that the engine movement eventually tore the flex pipe, which both made the exhaust loud and let a bunch of air in just upstream of the cat and its o2 sensor. I had the exhaust replaced before he drove away, though the CEL was still on. I told him that it took a certain number of key cycles without the issue present to go off (I think disconnecting the battery long enough to reset the ECU will do it too, but I forgot to do that), and asked him to let me know if the CEL was still on when he got home.

He told me that he was paying the guy/shop that was testing the car to do a more thorough diagnosis of it so that he could understand what he might need. The way the guy was describing the car did not sound optimistic. The VIN is JNKCP01D2TT530935. He and the car are in Oakland.

David

<martin_g34@yahoo.com><davidpertuz@mindspring.com>
<zzzhtml><zzzbody>

In CA they plug in to the OBD port and do a sniffer test on all cars.

If he's a car guy and he wants to troubleshoot and fix the problem have him post his smog results and that will help the list narrow down the problem. I've got a question for those of y'all in CA. One of my friends just bought my '96 P10 and drove it back to CA from Chicago. He had a smog appointment for it today, and it did not pass. I am not sure what all the issues are (my phone battery died, so I got cut off) but it sounds like the motor itself is an issue. I got the car with a bad motor and when it eventually I died I put in a replacement from SOKO, when they still had a warehouse in Chicago. It is a red-top motor, though I don't know whether it's high-compression or not. All emissions equipment is the same, as that (incl. intake mani, etc.) was carried over from the original engine.

-Is this car going to pass CARB smog at all with the motor it has? If nominally no, is it possible to find a friendly place that will pass the car as long as it actually passes the sniffer, etc.?

-Does CARB do a sniffer test for OBD2 cars? IL has emissions 'testing' but it's just a
plug-in-to-the-OBD2-port thing, and the car has never had a sniffer test in my ownership of it, so I have no idea if, say, the cat is good.

What else do I not know about CARB emissions compliance? I really want to help him find a solution to this. The car is stock except, I suppose, for the possible high compression.

thanks,
David

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
The mailing list home page is http://www.se-r-list.org/
To modify your subscription, go to http://www.se-r-list.org/mailman/listinfo/se-r

</zzzbody></zzzhtml></davidpertuz@mindspring.com></martin_g34@yahoo.com>
