Never heard anyone complain about getting a little lube on their cylinder

I don't think the lube type is all that critical. Just keep in mind that a small bit may get into the cylinder.

Aha! Good bet that's it. My new injectors didn't come with o-rings, so I took them off the old injectors. I tried to be as careful as I could. At least I've got extras. What kind of lube is appropriate?

Sounds like you nicked/pinched a lower o-ring when reinstalling the injectors. Pull them back out, give 'em a good looking over, and use a coating of lubricant when putting them back in.

Fun fact: a torn lower o-ring can allow enough fuel past it to hydro-lock your motor.

Ok, I spoke too soon - car is clearly running better, but still drinking gas through a fire hose and still dumping raw fuel all the way through the engine and out through the header gasket. I expected the new injectors to fix this! Will check #4 plug again and then dive into diagnosis.

Installed new injectors and fuel filter over the weekend, problem solved. Idle is slightly rough so there's a little bit more diagnosis to do - now to see if my s**t fuel consumption goes back to normal!

Josh Palmer clued me in to some Bosch injectors that were on closeout for $25 each, so I just ordered new injectors - that's the same it would cost me to have mine sent out for cleaning, and there's no guarantee those would all be good. Some hose pliers are on the way so I can replace the fuel filter again, and after that all should be good. Well, except for the list of ten other minor things that have been invariant for ten years :)

Unfortunately my commute to work is going to go to shit next week, and I may find myself having to sometimes drive to work for the first time in a decade. If I do, the SE-R will gen the car for it! :)

Sorry for the late reply, but I was going to say that a stuck injector sounds most plausible. A properly working ignition won't be able to light off the mixture, and you'll get the fuel running down the front if the head gasket isn't perfectly sealed.

Congrats on the Saab, and for getting the SE-R back on the road after such a long wait. I have had rod knock enough times to know it when I hear it, and at one time I was overly sensitive to the noise and found a minor rattle at ~5k RPM that I started to worry about. After a few months, I finally narrowed it down to a loose alternator pivot bolt! =D

Update: Injector #4 was stuck open. No idea how that happened, but when I replaced it the problem went away. Good!
