For my Magnaflow, I just cleaned the heck out of it.
I used either brake cleaner, rubbing alcohol, or both
(can't remember). I tried scuffing it up by hand but
it seemed to be a futile effort. So I just painted it
flat black with some BBQ rated stuff (1600F I think)
and it's stayed on 99.75% over 3 years. Plus, the
paint is cheap so it's easy to do any touching up if
necessary. I've only retouched it because it scraped
on the ground once.
