This will probably be answered better by someone else, but the downfall
to alcohol is the fact that it burns. Water on the other hand never
burns. As alcohol moves from liquid to gas, it does remove more heat
from the charge than water, however, since water doesn't burn, the water
molecules reside in the combustion chamber between the molecules of
gasoline, or alcohol for that matter. This physical separation of
explosive molecules is what provides the detonation deterrent. That is
absent with alcohol. Water injection is you best bet for reducing
detonation. Better yet, 2 fuel tanks and 2 softwares to run either gas
or alcohol as fuel. AS you pointed out alcohol is a very friendly boost
fuel.
