It actually is called the switch, the key portion is called the lock cylinder. I don't think the car will shut off if it dies either. Usually it won't start like the problem is now. All it has inside are a series of contacts. For some reason it seems like the "start" set wears out faster than the others.

It's not the ignition switch itself. It's wiring and a connector which attaches to the ignition (I did not need to change the key or locks).
