Differences between "R" and Avenir/BB blocks?

As far as I know, there is no difference, except oil feed bungs/holes
for the turbo. The GTI-R block is the one that's different, with big
main bearing oil passages, and piston oil squirters. I am no expert
though, and am waiting for someone else to chime in.
Differences aside, your current SR20DE block from a naturally aspirated
1991-1994 SE-R is an excellent and cheap place to start. If you're
looking for mild boost, the head gasket method of changing compression
should would okay. If you're looking for more boost, you'll want to
think about stronger pistons and rods ala GTI-R. Those pistons/rods or
similar will lower your compression without the need for the thicker
head gasket, and will provide the much needed extra strength.
