Deciphering Engine Codes

Does anyone on the list know how to decipher the engine code from a JDM
engine?  I just got mine for my NX, and I was curious if I could track down
the year of manufacture on it.  It has two sets of numbers.  One is engraved
on the block near where the transmission will bolt up.  It has SR20 and a
couple spaces followed with: 992019A.  One the "rear" below the intake
manifold, there are a couple other numbers: 278-1203-03-138.

I know the FSM states how to read a VIN, but I know Japan is different.  I
know the block is from 97+, since it is a VE.  My guess is that it is a "99"
b/c of the numbers, but that is just a guess.
