5th gear kit

I'm in the middle of installing the 5th gear popout "kit" bundled by
Courtesy.  I've got the 5th gear parts installed, but I'm stuck trying to
install the striking rod retaining pin. . .  I sucessfully removed the old
pin and replaced the oil seal, but I can't seem to install the new pin.  In
fact, I messed up the new one trying to install it, so I need another.
Anyway, I'd love to hear some suggestions or hints as to how to install this
thing.
