A cold engine has a cold intake manifold, throttle body and engine
compartment. This yields a colder, denser, more massive intake charge,
which will make more HP.
The problem is that the engine was designed to run properly (all clearances
between moving parts at the correct distance) with the engine fully warmed
up. I try not to run my cars hard until they have warmed up for this very
reason.
You should be able to gain all of the cold air performance with a warm motor
by using a cold air intake and the Outlaw intake manifold gasket set that
blocks off the warm coolant from going into the intake manifold.
