GTi-R Swap

Great source of info for the swap. AFAIK however you can use the radiator
fans from the clip if you continue to use the TMIC, the ga16de fuel pump
will be fine at stock boost, but if you raise the boost levels at all be
prepared to upgrade. Im working within a budget so I will be adapting my
GA16DE harness to work with the GTi-R ecu and harness as well. Jim Wolf
Technology emailed me a ecu wiring diagram for the pulsar, it is as
mentioned however in japanese, luckily i have friends who read and speak
japanese fluently and they are in the middle of translating it as we speak.
as soon as it is done Clark wants me to email it back to them at JWT so
they
can redistribute the translated version to needy customers. If you retain
the TMIC be prepared to cut a hole in your hood or use the hoodscoop from
the GTi-R clip and transplant it onto your stock hood, the TMIC will not
clear a stock hood and even if you have some form of aftermarket hood that
it does clear, you absolutely must have a cool air flow running into the
tmic via a vent or hoodscoop (hoodscoop being better than vents). The
problem with the TMIC is it sits right on top of the motor, and heat rises,
so its efficiency is retarded by the heat from the engine rising up and out
of the car. One thing, that is extremely important to mention is to upgrade
your brakes to the AD22VF's from the clip or get a fastbrakes upgrade. Your
stock GA16DE brakes are absolutely not suitable for this motor, and you
will
kill yourself and other people if you dont heed this warning.
Save yourself a lot of time and money sourcing parts by buying a complete
front clip. This way you know you are getting everything you need to make
the swap work short of the transmission, axles, heater hoses, axle mounts,
motor mounts etc. I bought my clip shipped from canada on ebay for 2500
(thats including the shipping) the clip itself only cost me 1525 dollars.
You will have parts left over that you can resel back on ebay, and you will
have the luxury of using parts like the digital climate control console and
the gauge cluster from the GTi-R.
You cannot use the GA16DE tranny obviously, the bellhousings are completely
different amongst other obvious differences. Get an SR20 Tranny, 3 of the
bell housing bolts will not be used, you will just have to deal with it. I
believe 1 of the axle mount bolts on each side will not be used either. The
fly wheel bolt holes will have to be bored out to 11mm and the flywheel
itself will need to be resurfaced. You will need to fabricate or have
JGYcustoms.com fabricate you the throttle cable and cruise control bracket
as well, jgy sells the brackets for 15 bucks, or just make one yourself if
youre lazy or dont have the tools neccessary to do so. Make sure you get an
LSD tranny without the 5th gear popout problem, and if you want to make
sure
your tranny is going to hold the power from the GTi-R motor without
breaking, shotpeen and cryo the gears, or better still buy completely new
gears and have them shotpeened and cryoed before even installing them. I
havent checked yet, but if you are swapping from an automatic to the manual
(as I am) you may need a new crossmember as well, but this I have not
confirmed yet. The GTi-R comes equipped with ABS, if you are fortunate
enough to have front and rear wheel disc brakes this can be converted over
to the sentra/200sx but it will add time and money to the process. the old
ABS systems arent that great anyhow and youre better off yanking it and
selling it for parts money.
DO NOT MESS WITH THE THROTTLE BODIES, if you try to adjust them yourself
youre in for a world of hurt in that getting them readjusted properly will
subtract years from your lifespan and add much grey hair to your head. Just
start with obvious things, you are going from a GA16DE to an SR20DE
essentially, and that swap is well documented, get those parts first, then
focus on going from the SR20DE to the DET replacement parts.
As a final note, I am taking detailed and lengthy camcorder footage and
photographs of the swap as we go (going from a 98 sentra gxe to the GTi-R
motor and a 5 speed tranny swap), however I have nowhere to host these
pictures, footage or the writeup i intent to do after the swap is
completed.
If any of you have a webspace provider or have a means to hook me up with
webspace that wopuld be great, this is a neglected motorswap as far as
documentation is concerned, but for those of you who want to squeeze as
much
power out of an SR20 as possible this is the way to go.
