Mounting battery in trunk

I' m wondering why the cut out for the alternator and battery?
How is the relay turned on or off? Is it automatic or by
a separate switch somewhere. Also, a friend of mine had a copy of
April 99 Sport Compact Car where it shows a battery relocation
to the trunk and they ran a separate ground wire all the way
to the original battery grounding point. They didn't make any
comment in the article about whether that was important or not.
If it's of any interest I could probably
scan the article and email it out.
