Obviously, you want to minimize your use of brakes while
descending. To this end, you'll want to keep it in a low
gear. I also recommend turning on the air conditioner.
You'll basically be powering the air conditioner with your
wheels, which will help keep your speed down. I've tried
this with my '93 classic on long descents and it clearly
helps.
Really do consider hiking up, though, if that's an option.
