I *think* that this is incorrect. The hub is just used to center the
wheel during lug torquing. The lugs still carry the bulk of the load
against the threads. Most of remainder of the load is carried by the
beveled seats of the lug nuts against the wheels, though some is being
carried by the hub. As long as the plastic isn't soft enough to deflect
towards the exposed face of the ring (the only part that isn't being held
in by metal), there's no reason that plastic couldn't be used.
Again, I'm not an engineer, and I can't prove the above supposition.
Please correct me if *I'm* wrong...
