Sounds just like my starter issues. Sometimes it would work. Other
times it wouldn't work, it would wheeze and then click or be totally
dead. I had to push start the car. I removed my starter and put
in one I bench tested as good. It worked fine. Then, same problem.
I then rebuilt the old starter, bench tested it, installed it. Same
problem. Took out the starter, bench tested both, both worked. Then
I looked closer at the problem. I mentioned this before. The starter
grounds through the engine block, through its mating surface. I
cleaned both surfaces thoroughly with sandpaper, and voila, no more
starting problems.

That's my experience.
