I ended up going with 3/4" hex stock, 4140 steel hot (rolled?).
It should weigh in at about 6.5 to 7lbs at I *think* 1.66lbs/ft.
It'll be 50", with 4" of thread on each end (left on one end, right on the
other), and will basically
work like a turnbuckle.
I'm working on the plates still, I want those to be 1/8" stock.
This should give me plenty of stiffness, I believe.
