Clutch cable adjustment

noticed last night/today that my clutch cable was loose.  using the FSM i
adjusted the cable.  my questions is, should it engage the clutch more to the
top, bottom or is it just personal preference?  by doing it to the FSM
standards, it engages at the top.  the clutch engagement has always been near
the bottom of the peddle travel on my car from when i bought it, through a
clutch and tranny replacment, til now...3 years.
is it something i should just get used to, or can i adjust it to where i want
it,as long as the cable is tight?
