Belt failure

My alternator/compressor belt has just burned off and separated from the
vehicle and I have the brake and battery warning lights on.  Compressor
clutch still clicks on and off.  I'm still waiting for the motor to cool
down so I can see what still turns.  I guess I'd rather that it was the
alternator but do alternators seize like that or is it more likely the
compressor?
