fuel pressure regulator gone bad?

Was just wondering if anyone has had their stock fuel pressure regulator go
bad... My car is running crazy rich, even pumping out a little bit of black
smoke when at idle.  When I get on boost, look out behind me!  The car still
runs really freakin fast, but I only got about 18mpg on a mostly highway cruise
and about 12 mph while romping around town.  I tried changing out the O2
sensor; the car ran well for a day (pretty much smoke free), but promptly
started running very badly the next day (lots of hesitation when getting on
boost).  And the plugs are sooty as heck.  I guess the ECU has compensated
since then or something because it runs like a champ aside from pumping out a
ton of smoke whenever I really step on the gas and getting really bad gas
mileage.  I know my cat is shot but I want to get the car running correctly
before I get a new one.  I need to check the TPS, any other suggestions?
