I'd say that your motor mounts are shot (good asumption considering you have
180k miles) which is allowing your motor to move a lot. Case in point, when
you're on the throttle, it torques the motor which moves the tranny and in turn
the shifter. When let off the throttle, everything moves back to neutral which
causes the shifter to move in the end. That's my guess at least!
