I got my S3's with a group deal so I paid $500.  You
do not need the ECU and valvesprings but those parts
ARE required for some other cams (specifically the C
series cams -- which are less streetable, I believe --
i.e. bigger top end gains are offset by losses
elsewhere).
The ECU is recommended for optimum performance but I
didn't have the money at the time and I still noticed
a nice kick in the ass without it.  At the time the
cams were the only real mod I had on my car.
If you have patience, attention to detail, and a few
basic tools you CAN install them yourself in a few
hours.
