Power steering rack leak

Got the car up on stands today to do a bucnch of pre-winter maintenance.
I've got a serious PS leak and I did notice recently that the RHs boot on
the rack is torn. I had my girlfriend operate the steering with the engine
running while I looked through the wheel well, and saw that oil coming out
of the torn boot seemed to be the primary leak source. (It also appears o
be leaking from the hose fitting at the bottom of the pump, suggesting I
need to replace or rebuild the pump) Knowing how racks are constructed, I
am almost certain there should be no oil at all where the boot is, and the
fact that there is means that one of my rack oil seals is bad and the oil
is getting past it. This means I need a rack rebuild, which means either
wrestling that thing out of the car with the engine in place, or dropping
the engine and doing a bunch of other stuff too. Anyone replaced a rack
with the engine in? Anything I'm missing? I'd love to just out new boots
on, but I don't think that's going to address my problem.
