In response to yours and Omer's messages, I should point out (as I think Ray did) that my alternator appears to be fine - I could not have driven for 30 minutes at night on a stone-dead battery if it weren't. If it's not the battery itself, perhaps it is in the charging circuit between the alternator and the battery, but the alternator handled driving just fine. 

This will teach me (again!) about procrastinating, I hope. Maybe I'll actually replace the rod bearings in my SE-R before it gets cold again! :)
