While he may not have been a good business manager or a real technical guy, he KNEW how to put together the right people and direct the content. During his tenure he brought on Dave, Mike, Josh, and several other good tech folks (can't forget Ken Nord, another SE-R guy). That was the golden age of that magazine and IMHO IF Larry weren't ousted, it would still be in publication and still be a great enthusiast magazine.

I always read it cover to cover. The turd they brought in to replace Larry was a total doofus. He was in charge when I wrote my article and the only changes made in editing were stupid sophomoric crap that came from the direction he was taking the magazine (Scott Oldham IIRC).

I think guys like Dave and Mike and a handful of others could put together a great glossy print magazine that included no BS technical stuff and some good ol' celebratory features with well done cars, not over done cars. The problem today is it's SO much cheaper to put together a web site and all the kids are doing it. Therein lay the problem however (at least long term) is that it's all the KIDS that are doing it and most suck. There are few like Mike putting together quality, TRUE quality web content.

The advertisers might have and that might be what you saw but not the cover nor the article photos. Now if we are talking WAY early SCC like late 80's early 90's then you may have a point. I have an oldie goldie SCC that had a nice parting article on an SCCA G Production 510. Most of the featured cars were hondas and most of the modifications were wheels, paint and a chrome filter and/or valve cover. When Mike, Dave and the boys arrived in SCC town, the magazine became something scompletely different and competent.
