I had a problem like that. When I'd start to get the scratchy sound, I 
would use the fade and balance buttons to isolate it to a speaker. I 
tried reconnecting that speaker a couple of times, but ended up, while 
installing a subwoofer, rewiring the two rear speakers. That solved the 
problem for a couple of year, but then the other rear speaker started 
acting up intermittently. I think it's evil demons...
