Speaking of Alternators...

A cautionary tale. I had to replace my alternator due to the upper radiator hose leaking down on to the alt. I thought I was burning coolant (I have 195K, detonated once at the track and burn some oil) but discovered a hidden leak. The hose barb "grew" a lump of aluminum oxide allowing it to leak past the clamp from underneath the hose, hidden from view. I saw some dampness but it didn't seem to be enough to explain all the coolent I was replacing. After finishing up the replacement - getting that pivot bolt in w/the turbo in place was a PITA- I was pressed for time and didn't want to wait for RTV to set up to seal the upper hose barb to the head. Bought a sheet of light-blue, rubberized fiber gasket material from AutoZone and cut out a gasket to fit. Totally clean for 4 months and I haven't had to add coolant at all. A lot of time and $$ for a damn leak.
