Adapter Plate was RE: Gearset for higher HP..

Pardon my ignorance, but what is done to the input shaft when an adapter
plate is used?  I understand the theory of the adapter plate, and I haven't
done a clutch install in about a year; but would a custom input shaft be
created/used to allow proper engagement of the shaft into the flywheel?  If
not, I would assume that an improperly seated input shaft would then be the
weak point instead of the gears.
