Not.  The bolts don't center the tranny to the block accurately enough.  So
there are two metal dowels to precisely locate it.---

One dowel is in the transmission and one is in the engine.

There is a very slight step on the flywheel. How much should it be and
how could that cause it?

BTW, the disc has wear marks on both sides of the leading edge of the
spring holders. Any of the springs could have popped out eventually.

What are the springs for anyway?

I'm going to get the flywheel resurfaced. It would be good to know why
this is happening so I don't have to go through this again in 30k miles.
