weird ass problem

I don't know if this is relevant to Jennifer's post, but Julian's
experience reminds me of when my shift-rod spring broke.  Underneath the
shifter mechanism (above the cat), there is a spring that connects the
shift-rod to the car.  It helps to bring the shifter back to center with
slight tension.  Anyway, this can rust and break.

Maybe that is what happened to Julian - the spring could have interfered
with the shifter, then fallen away.  That might explain the notchy feel
now.
