Was it perhaps spray-bomb undercoating (you can get it at parts stores and
hardware stores)?  Maybe he figured out a way to brush on Plasti-Dip-like
substance?

Can't "drill" through carpet.  The threads get caught in the bit, and you
wind up with a bruised wrist from smacking the doorjamb at WOT on the
drill. ;)  You could use a round punch, but a utility knife has always
served me well.  Punch an X-shaped hole, centered on the bolt location,
and be done with it.
