Well, they were sold in Japan, England, and Germany, actually.  Most other
locations were imported from those three.  The German cars were
left-hand-drive, too, but they're SIGNIFICANTLY rarer than the RHD models.
 Affordable?  I suppose if you're making six digits per year, a GTi-R
could be considered affordable, but if you're a lowly blue-collar geek
like me, you'll never get one on US shores.

I think that getting an N14 Lucino/Almera/Pulsar from Mexico would be
good, then doing an SR20[D,V]E transplant once it gets here would be your
best option for getting a hatchback SE-R.  Still isn't AWD, and still
isn't cheap.
