idle problem

My "92 classic(115k) idles fine at start but when thoroughly warmed up
it will no longer idle at all. At first this problem was intermittent but
is persistent now. i have checked the alternator and it seems to be
normal. i have to rev the engine over 3k or the lights are dim. Once i rev
it they will work fine until it stalls. The only problem i have identified
is a burned out alternator light. Could this be the problem? Any help
greatly apppreciated.
