Due to the loss of the Red G20 Turbo to another driver's inattention, Geo
unexpectedly had to get busy getting his '91 SE-R back on the road. This
involved putting the oil pan back onto the original engine which had been
gathering dust in his garage.
While bolting the pan onto the block, King Turd managed to crack both bolt
bosses for the oil pan in the aluminum front cover. He put a lot of
Permatex gray on the upper pan and apparently some was shoved into the bolt
holes when installing the bolts, enough that he "hydrolocked" the holes. We
heard the cracks but thought the noise was from popping bubbles. True cause
was discovered when we spied hairline fractures in each bolt boss, which
became obvious as Permatex slowly oozed out of the cracks.
So, word of the day is "restraint" when using gasket compound.
Two more notems: Dodge Dakota front diffy has no limited slip and OEM tires
on said Dakota 4X4 SUCK in mud.
