I've wondered about this myself.  Slipped and clamped exhausts tend to
make lots of noise; rattling, creaking from expansion/contraction, and
so on.  Will welding the slipped joints quiet them down totally, much,
or at all?  Butt joints are no fun for somebody with a limited selection
of tools. :(
