1/4 luan plywood worked for me.  Suggestion -- make it two overlapping
pieces and replace the carpet with some industrial low-loop stuff. Cut the
carpet right, and you have a lift-up door for a little storage space ahead
of the spare. Hinge optional. I suppose the cut might also keep the panel
from slicing through the rear seat in case of a heavy rear-ender.
