short shifter and clutch install

I have searched the archives and read numerous things about shortening
the clutch cable. But as I try to shift into first and reverse with the
B&M shifter it seems that the cable I have still isn't short enough as I
can't get into gear as it grinds. I put a new cable on and removed the
lock nut and put it behind the thumbwheel as to give an extra bit of
adjustment. What else can I do to shorten the cable enough to not have
it engage at the floor? I tried everything in the archives except
welding of the brackets as I don't have the means to do that.
